Vodafone Group PLC on Thursday launched a new digital travel platform centred on a travel eSIM, offering mobile data services across more than 200 destinations and 700 networks worldwide.
The Newbury, England-based telecommunications company said the service, available to users on any mobile network, allows travellers to activate affordable, high-speed data connectivity before or during their trips without changing their existing number.
It is available via Vodafone’s website and app stores for iOS and Android devices.
The travel eSIM provides a range of data-only packages from 1 to 150 gigabytes with usage periods of up to 90 days. It supports mobile hotspot functionality, allowing users to share their data across multiple devices.
Vodafone said the platform is supported by its GenAI-powered customer assistant, SuperTOBI, which offers multilingual support and faster, more advanced responses than traditional chatbots.
‘With our new digital platform, we are offering users of all networks across the world a worry-free, easy-to-use travel experience in more than 200 countries,’ said Vodafone Chief Executive Margherita Della Valle. ‘The Vodafone travel eSIM service is set to be the ideal international data service for any mobile user.’
The launch comes as Vodafone aims to tap into growing demand for flexible travel connectivity, with global eSIM spending expected to more than double to nearly €7 billion by 2028. Research commissioned by Vodafone found that 84% of respondents would consider using an eSIM service if it is cost-effective, convenient, and allows them to retain their existing number.
The new offering will also be supported by complementary services such as travel insurance and third-party promotions. Vodafone’s first major partnership is with Uber One, which will include the Travel eSIM in a member promotion across 44 European countries.
Voice calls and SMS are not included in the travel eSIM plans.
Vodafone shares fell 3.3% to 73.38 pence in London on Thursday morning, making the stock the third-worst performer in the FTSE 100 index.
