Ryanair Holdings PLC on Friday reported traffic growth for last month, while Wizz Air Holdings PLC said it enjoyed a strong April due to the Easter period.

Budget carrier Ryanair carried 18.3 million passengers last month, an increase of 6% from 17.3 million a year prior. Its load factor increased to 93% from 92%.

On a rolling 12-month basis, passenger numbers totalled 201.3 million, up from 185.0 million. Dublin-based Ryanair said the load factor improved to 94% from 93%.

Wizz Air reported 11% growth in passenger numbers to 5.4 million in April from 4.9 million a year prior. The Budapest-based budget airline said its capacity rose 11% also to 6.1 million from 5.4 million.

However, its load factor weakened slightly to 89.8% from 90.3%.

‘With Easter falling entirely in April this year, our new fiscal year started strongly, with a seasonal increase in passenger numbers in the month, as anticipated. We expect this seasonal effect to normalise in the months ahead, consistent with historical trends. While overall demand was strong, load factor was modestly lower due to one-directional VFR traffic patterns during the Easter holiday period,’ the Budapest-based budget airline said.

On a rolling 12-month basis, passenger numbers were 3.1% higher at 63.9 million from 62.0 million, with capacity up 1.9% to 70.2 million from 68.8 million. The load factor was stronger at 91.1% from 90.1%.

Wizz Air shares were 0.1% lower at 1,716.00 pence each in London on Friday morning. Ryanair was up 3.1% at €21.42 each in Dublin.
