Ireland’s unemployment rate rose slightly on-month at the end of last year, according to numbers released by the Central Statistics Office on Wednesday.

The unemployment rate in December rose slightly to 4.2% from 4.1% the month prior. Around 1,400 more people were unemployed in December than in November.

Annual unemployment was down, however.

Compared to the 4.5% rate recorded in December 2023, around 3,900 fewer people were unemployed in December 2024.

Male unemployment rose to 4.2% in December from 4.1% the previous month, but was down from 4.3% on-year. Female unemployment was 4.2%, unchanged from November’s revised rate, but lower than the previous year’s 4.6% rate.

Youth unemployment increased to 11.6% from a revised rate of 11.2% in November, while unemployment between the ages of 25 and 74 was unchanged at 3.0%.

These figures are seasonally adjusted, and forecast based on the trend in the live register, which includes recipients of working-age income support.
