Eden Research PLC on Tuesday said that it has applied for its Ecovelex product to be approved in the EU, and also intends to pursue authorisation in the UK.

The Abingdon, England-based company, which develops and supplies sustainable solutions for crop protection, animal health and consumer products, is applying to have Ecovelex authorised, with Corteva Agriscience Inc as its distribution partner.

Ecovelex is a product for the seed treatment market, and is designed to replace conventional chemicals which are banned in the EU and UK. It creates an unpleasant taste or odour which repels birds, leaving seeds intact and birds unaffected.

Eden has been developing Ecovelex with Corteva Agriscience for the last three years, and is confident the product will be useful for farmers looking to meet consumer demands for more sustainable agriculture.

The authorisation of Ecovelex is likely to take some time. A review by Austria, which is acting as interzonal rapporteur, will take between 18 and 24 months, after which each EU state will either ratify the authorisation or request more information.

‘Eden’s collaboration with Corteva Agriscience over the past several years has been highly productive, and I am pleased to see the first real commercial benefits from these activities within reach,’ said Chief Executive Officer Sean Smith.

Eden Research shares were trading 0.6% higher at 3.47 pence each in London on Tuesday afternoon.
