Investors hold their breath ahead of popular vote

Sports nutrition minnow Science in Sport (SIS:AIM) could provide portfolios with a boost when it dashes in with its finals later this month (26 Jun). Confirmation of strong sales trends and positive traction with web and overseas initiatives could trigger earnings upgrades.

The company, known as SiS, makes products ranging from energy powders and isotonic gels to protein-based recovery bars scientifically formulated to improve sporting performance or recovery. Besides strong brand recognition among elite athletes - brand ambassadors include Olympians Chris Hoy and Helen Jenkins - SiS’ products have growing appeal among amateur athletes.

In its pre-close trading update (9 Apr), the firm, armed with brand strength, pricing power and healthy growth prospects in a £450 million UK market, flagged 24% annual sales growth to around £6.8 million. This was ahead of expectations and reflected strong growth through the major grocers, high street chains and independent retailers.

SiS, now targeting a $20 billion-plus global market, also highlighted momentum behind direct e-commerce sales. The firm has launched (14 May) a mobile version of its website to tap into the proliferation of smartphone and tablet transactions.

Fast-growing Science in Sport should provide micro-cap traders with an energy boost.
