Vodafone Group PLC, Qualcomm Inc and Xiaomi Corp on Monday said a first successful 5G test of its kind in Europe will pave the way for faster upload speeds and wider coverage during 2024.

The three communications technology companies said the technical test of advanced 5G uplink technology achieved peak upload speeds of up to 273 megabits per second. Most of today’s smartphone and home broadband services are capable of an average upload speed of just 100 Mbps, they noted.

‘The enhanced 5G technology raises upload speeds closer to download levels whilst also extending coverage and increasing capacity,’ the companies said.

Alberto Ripepi, chief network officer at Vodafone, said: ‘We want our customers to be among the first anywhere in the world to benefit from this new 5G feature when it becomes available. That’s why we are working with key partners to lead the industry in pulling together and testing the necessary network, silicon chips and devices to turn it into a reality, all while driving a stronger vendor and developer ecosystem.’

Vodafone shares were 0.7% higher at 68.08 pence each on Monday morning in London, while Xiaomi shares closed 1.5% lower at HK$12.98 each in Hong Kong. Qualcomm shares had closed 4.6% higher at $151.96 each on Friday in New York.
