Filtronic PLC on Thursday touted a new contract win with an unnamed global provider of 5G telecoms infrastructure equipment for the provision of its Morpheus X2 product.

Filtronic is a Sedgefield, England-based designer and manufacturer of products and sub-systems for the aerospace, defence, telecoms infrastructure, space, and critical communications markets.

The initial production contract is valued at £900,000. It is designed to facilitate the global launch of a product which it said significantly extends the range of E-band point to point radio by providing an additional three decibel-milliwatts of linear output power.

This increases the line-of-sight transmission distance of an existing outdoor unit within a mobile base station up to 12 kilometres, a distance that would normally require multiple repeater stations, or more typically the installation of an optical fibre cable, Filtronic said.

The initial Morpheus X2 production order will be shipped in financial 2024, with further production volumes forecast in financial 2025. Filtronic’s financial year ends May 31.

‘We are delighted to secure an initial production order for our Morpheus X2 E-band transceiver from one of the world’s largest 5G telecoms infrastructure equipment suppliers,’ said Chief Executive Officer Richard Gibbs.

‘Working closely with our customer’s design team we were able to apply our unique power amplifier IP and E-band design expertise to deliver a high-power ODU solution that will change the way in which 5G networks are deployed. We look forward scaling up the manufacture of Morpheus X2 solutions in 2024 and beyond.’

Filtronic shares were trading 4.5% higher at 12.28 pence each in London on Thursday afternoon.
